Four Chinese characters - Shun Zhi Tong Bao / Tung in Manchu left and Tong in Chinese right. Datong Garrison in Shanxi, issued in 1660-1661. 27mm, 4.05 grams. Hartill #22.78.
Emperor Shunzhi (reigned 1643–1661) was the first Qing emperor to rule directly from Beijing after the Manchus conquered China in 1644. Ascending the throne at age five, his early reign was dominated by the regent Dorgon, who oversaw the Qing consolidation of North China. After Dorgon’s death, Shunzhi asserted personal authority and promoted policies aimed at stabilizing the newly conquered empire. He supported Confucian scholars, reduced harsh military impositions, and encouraged cultural integration. His reign was cut short when he died in 1661 - traditionally from smallpox - leaving the throne to his son, the future Kangxi Emperor.
