Constantius II was a Roman emperor who ruled from 337 to 361 CE, one of the three sons of Constantine the Great who divided the empire after their father’s death. As ruler of the eastern empire - and later sole emperor - Constantius spent much of his reign defending the frontiers against Sasanian Persia and dealing with internal power struggles, including conflicts with his cousins and rival usurpers. He played a major role in the theological disputes of the era, supporting Arian-leaning bishops and shaping imperial religious policy. Though criticized for suspicion and severity, he maintained relative stability until his death in 361, after which he was succeeded by his cousin Julian.
