The Kedah Sultanate is one of the oldest Malay sultanates, located in present-day northwestern Malaysia, and traditionally claims its origins as early as the 4th century CE, though it became an Islamic sultanate around the 12th or 13th century. Initially a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom known as Kadaram, it was heavily influenced by Indian culture and later became a thriving trade center due to its strategic coastal location near the Straits of Malacca. The conversion to Islam is attributed to Raja Phra Ong Mahawangsa, who took the name Sultan Muzaffar Shah, marking the formal establishment of the Kedah Sultanate. Kedah was frequently contested by regional powers such as Siam (Thailand) and later came under British influence in the 19th century. Despite periods of foreign control, the Kedah Sultanate has survived into the modern era and continues today as a constitutional monarchy within Malaysia.
