Sri in similar to issues in the name of Rana Vigraha. It probably dates to the short period of anarchy which followed the Arab conquest of Sindh around 712 CE. The Caliphate lost control over Sindh in the years to come, and local rulers minted various coins during this time. This coinage is very poorly understood at this time, but usually featured the sun on obverse, a reference to the locally popular worship of the sun-god. Thus, this coinage is Hindu and not Islamic, probably issued by a local Hindu ruler, minted either when the central authority of Raja Dahir collapsed, or in the later decades when the ruler was temporarily free of the Islamic rule.

We wrote an article on this type, known from a single small hoard from a few years ago, but it is yet to be published.
