VEIC (English East India Company) bale mark, date (1814) below // •1• / DOIT / JAVA / •. 24.5mm, 5.91 grams. Probably minted in Jakarta. Imitations of Singh# C.57; Pr# 26; KM# 244.

Interesting issue, local imitation of the British duit, with crude and crooked inscriptions. Unofficial or locally produced imitations of the British Java tin duits (issued during the brief British administration of Java, 1811–1816 under Stamford Raffles) are known but they are not well documented in standard catalogues. These imitations were likely produced because the official copper and tin coinage was in chronic short supply during and after the transition from Dutch to British rule. Local workshops or private minters appear to have cast crude copies using tin or low-grade alloys, often mimicking the general fabric and inscriptions of official issues but with poor engraving, irregular flans, and blundered legends. Unlike official coins, which followed standardized designs tied to the British administration, these imitations tend to vary widely and lack consistent minting quality, suggesting decentralized production.

The British occupation of Java took place from 1811 to 1816, during the Napoleonic Wars, when the Netherlands had fallen under French control. Concerned about French influence in the Dutch East Indies, the British launched a successful military expedition led by Sir Stamford Raffles, capturing Batavia (now Jakarta) and the island after a brief campaign. Raffles served as Lieutenant-Governor and introduced significant administrative and economic reforms, including the land-tax system and efforts to modernize governance. He also encouraged the study of Javanese culture and history, commissioning archaeological research on Borobudur. The occupation ended with the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814, and in 1816, Java was returned to Dutch control, but the period left a lasting influence on colonial administration and scholarship in the region.
