Qin (c. 770–221 BC) was an ancient Chinese state that rose from relatively modest beginnings on the western frontier of the Zhou realm to become the most powerful of the Warring States. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, Qin gradually expanded eastward, strengthened its army, and introduced far-reaching administrative and economic reforms, particularly under Shang Yang in the 4th century BC. By the 3rd century BC it had become the dominant power among the Seven Warring States. Under King Zheng, Qin conquered its remaining rivals one by one, completing the unification of China in 221 BC. Zheng then assumed the title Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor, marking the transformation of the state of Qin into the Qin Dynasty (221–207 BC) and the beginning of imperial China.
