The Kalachuris of Tripuri were a powerful dynasty that ruled central India, particularly the region around modern-day Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, from the 9th to the 12th centuries CE. Their capital was at Tripuri (also known as Tewar), and they rose to prominence after the decline of the Gupta Empire. The Kalachuris controlled strategic trade routes and maintained influence over the Narmada valley. Notable rulers like Kokalla I and Gangeyadeva expanded their territories and engaged in wars with neighboring powers such as the Chandelas and the Paramaras. The dynasty gradually weakened by the 12th century, eventually being absorbed by stronger regional kingdoms.
