Bust right, traces of letters (uncleaned) // Monogram (of Alaric II or Athalaric). 9mm, 0.74 grams.
Rare. Very crude little example. Much better than the scan (it is not completely cleaned, and I could not get a good picture of it). The monogram is crude with a retrograde "C". It is probably a contemporary Gothic or Vandalic imitation of an official coin of Athalaric. The coin also lacks the middle bar (for "H"), it could conceivably belong to the Alaric II (484-507).
Athalaric was the king of the Ostrogoths in Italy between 526 and 534. He was a son of Eutharic and Amalasuntha, the youngest daughter of Theoderic the Great, whom Athalaric succeeded as king in 526.
