Zhu Yuanzhang rebelled against the Yuan dynasty and assumed the title of Emperor Tai Zu of the Ming dynasty in 1368.
Zhu Yuanzhang (1328–1398) rose from a destitute peasant and Buddhist monk to become a rebel leader who overthrew the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty and founded the Ming dynasty in 1368, ruling as the Hongwu Emperor. Emerging from the Red Turban movement, he defeated rival warlords, reunified China, and restored Han Chinese rule after decades of turmoil. As emperor, Zhu centralized power, reformed land and tax systems, promoted agriculture, and imposed strict laws, while his deep mistrust of officials led to sweeping purges. Ruthless yet effective, he established the political and institutional foundations that sustained the Ming for nearly three centuries.
