Two large Chinese characters Wu Zhu (=5 zhus)  / Blank, inside and outside rims. 26mm, 2.83 grams. Hartill #10.2; Gratzer/Fishman "One thousand years of Wu Zhu coinage" #p.64ff (type with no marks not listed in error). SKU T2230-46207

In the period following the reign of Emperor Huan Di (AD 146-168), many Wu Zhus were cast privately all over China (Sizhu Wu Zhu). Because they were cast in numerous foundries all over the empire and were not issued by a single authority, the weight, size, and quality of the cast coins varied greatly. Many of the full-sized coins have an official look to them, but they are still of unofficial casting. They seem to have been cast using the old coins of the previous Eastern Han emperors as mother coins. Many of the other coins are of smaller and cruder varieties, made with either œhomemade casts or with old coins (often filed or clipped) as mother coins. They can be distinguished from the official coins by their size and crude calligraphy. Furthermore, many of them are crude aftercasts, with characteristic surfaces in low relief and rough surfaces.

This coin is unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic.
