Blank flan (probably a flattened irregular coin of Tamar) countermarked with a circular countermark.  30mmx18mm, 11.52 grams. Pakhomov "Coins of Georgia" (1970) p.112 (countermark #7); for similar coin see Zeno #12951. SKU T537-50162

There were attempts to read this countermark as a stylized "David-Narin" (for Davit VI Narini, King of Georgia (1245-1293)), but this reading does not seem reasonable. It might be a monogram or some abbreviation of the name "Rusudan", but the meaning of this countermark is unknown at this time. It was applied to old worn coins and foreign coins  between 1223 and 1227 AD, during the reign of Rusudan.

Daughter of Queen Tamar of Georgia by David Soslan, she succeeded her brother George IV of Georgia on January 18, 1223. George™s untimely death marked the beginning of the end of the Georgian Golden Age.
