Constantine the Great was a pivotal Roman emperor who unified the empire after defeating Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge and later overcoming Licinius to become sole ruler. He issued the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance and favoring Christianity, and founded Constantinople as a new imperial capital. He also convened the Council of Nicaea, shaping early Christian doctrine, and his reign marked a major turning point in the Roman Empire’s shift toward Christianity.
