КНЯ / ZЬ ДАN / ИЛО (abbreviated "(coin of) Duke Daniil") in a double circle // Imitation of a reverse of a dang of the Golden Horde Khan Shadibek in a cartouche with four "lucky knots". 13mm, 0.54 grams. Suzdal mint?. Huletski/Petrunin/Fishman #1900C.

Very rare variety, rated R3 in HPF. A beautiful coin with mint luster, pretty much as struck. From an old collection, in exceptional condition and metal for this type.

Daniil Borisovich was a Duke of Nizhegorod-Suzdal Duchy. He, and his brother Ivan Borisovich "Tugoy Look" ("Tight Bow"), were dispossessed by Vasily I of Moscow in 1392. They fought and appealed to their Mongol overlords. In 1411 they lead a Mongol army and fought the Muscovites near Liskov village, winning the battle and gaining control over Nizhegorod-Suzdal for a few years. They both minted rare and popular coins before escaping in 1418 and disappearing from history.
