VRBS ROMA, helmeted bust left in imperial mantle / She-wolf left with twins, two stars above. Mintmark dot CONS epsilon dot. 19mm, 2.21 grams. Constantinople mint. RIC VII Constantinople 85; Sear 16520

The VRBS ROMA coinage of the 330s CE was a special commemorative series issued by Constantine the Great to honor the city of Rome during a period of imperial celebration and transition, especially around the founding of Constantinople in 330 CE. These coins typically feature a helmeted bust of the personified city of Rome on the obverse, symbolizing Rome’s enduring prestige. The reverse usually depicts the she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, surrounded by two stars - imagery reinforcing Rome’s legendary origins and divine favor. Struck mainly in bronze (AE3/AE4 denominations) across many imperial mints, the VRBS ROMA series was produced alongside the complementary CONSTANTINOPOLIS coinage, together promoting the idea of a dual-capital empire and the continuity of Roman identity even amid major political change.
