The Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) was the first half of the Song era, ruling from the capital Kaifeng after reunifying China from the Five Dynasties period. It became one of the most culturally advanced states in the world, known for developments in printing, gunpowder weapons, painting, and Neo-Confucian thought. Rapid economic growth and a highly commercialized society made Song China exceptionally wealthy. However, the dynasty struggled militarily against the Liao, Western Xia, and especially the rising Jurchen Jin. In 1127, during the Jingkang Incident, the Jin captured Kaifeng and the imperial family, ending the Northern Song and leading to the Southern Song period.
