Antigonus II Mattathias was the last Hasmonean king of Judea. He was the son of King Aristobulus II of Judea. He fought a long fight with Herod the Great, who was supported by Rome. In 37 BC he lost the struggle, was captured by Herod and handed over to the Romans for execution. Josephus states that Marc Antony beheaded Antigonus. Roman historian Dio Cassius says he was crucified.
