Long undeciphered legend // Blank. 138 mm, 14.37 grams. Hartill knife type 5, #4.51 (rated rarity 4).
These are poorly understood early knives – these are found almost exclusively in Eastern Shandong (the territory of the Warring States period Qi State) and the legends seem to name the Qi State as well. It is thought that these were cast during the occupation of the Qi State by the Yan State. The “Ming” knives were the main currency of the Yan State, so it is possible they cast these knives (in the shape and size they were familiar with) during the occupation in 284-279 BC. Crudely cast (as these always are), but with a complete and clear legend, no repairs. Very rare, especially with this character.
From an old US collection (Norman Frank Collection), auctioned off at CNG in 2023-2024.
