Sikandar Shah I (r. 1357–1389 CE), the son and successor of Shams al-Din Ilyas Shah, was the second ruler of the Ilyas Shahi dynasty of Bengal. His long reign of over three decades was marked by prosperity, stability, and notable cultural achievements. He is best remembered for commissioning the grand Adina Mosque at Pandua, then the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent, which symbolized both Bengal’s independence and its growing Islamic identity. Politically, he largely maintained peaceful relations with neighboring states, though he faced and repelled a major invasion by the Delhi Sultan Firuz Shah Tughlaq. Under Sikandar Shah, Bengal enjoyed economic growth through trade and agriculture, and his reign is often considered a high point of early Bengal Sultanate history.
