The Janids, also known as the Ashtarkhanids, were a dynasty of Uzbek origin that ruled the Khanate of Bukhara from c. 1599 to 1747). They descended from the Astrakhan branch of the Shaybanid family and came to power after the fall of the main Shaybanid line. The Janids initially maintained a centralized state with Bukhara as the capital, but over time their authority weakened due to internal divisions and the growing autonomy of tribal leaders. Their rule saw a decline in centralized power and increasing fragmentation, although Bukhara remained an important center of Islamic learning and culture. The dynasty faced repeated challenges from rival khanates and nomadic groups, and by the mid-18th century, the Janids were replaced by the Manghit dynasty, who ruled Bukhara as emirs under nominal Janid authority before formally taking power.
