Shah Jahan (1592–1666) was the fifth Mughal emperor of India, ruling from 1628 to 1658, and is best known for commissioning the Taj Mahal, one of the most iconic monuments in the world. A patron of art, architecture, and culture, Shah Jahan presided over the golden age of Mughal architecture, building grand structures such as the Red Fort in Delhi and the Jama Masjid. His reign was marked by relative internal stability, military campaigns in the Deccan, and flourishing trade and culture. The death of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631 deeply affected him and led to the construction of the Taj Mahal as her mausoleum. In his later years, Shah Jahan was deposed and imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, spending his final years in captivity, reportedly with a view of the Taj Mahal from his cell.
