Islam Shah Suri (r. 1545–1552 CE) was the second ruler of the Sur dynasty, which had replaced the Delhi Sultanate under his father Sher Shah Suri. Born as Jalal Khan, he succeeded his father after Sher Shah’s sudden death in 1545. Islam Shah continued his father’s centralizing policies, maintaining strict law and order, reorganizing the administration, and further refining the land revenue system that had made the Sur state strong. He was an austere and capable ruler, but also harsh, eliminating rivals - including close relatives - to secure his throne. While he kept the Mughal exiles under Humayun at bay, his rule was marked by growing unrest among Afghan nobles. His sudden death in 1552 left the Sur dynasty weakened, and factional struggles soon opened the way for Humayun’s return and the Mughal restoration.
