RRR silver dirham, temp. Kublai Khan (1260-1294), 1262/1263, Imil, Toluid Mongols

Anonymous, dated AH 661 (AD 1262/3). Toluid Tamgha, coiled decorations to sides, date around (written out 661)// Shahada, duriba / al-dirham / bi'l-mading / Imil around ("This dirham struck in Imil"). Imil mint. Nyamaa 20 (Möngke); Album S1979; Zeno 6537.

Very rare. This type was originally issued by the Great Khan Mongke (Kublai's older brother), and was continued by Kublai after Mongke's death in 1260 CE. The brothers shared the same tamgha, which makes sense since it was the tamgha of their Toluid family.

Kublai Khan or Qubilay Khan (23 September 1215 – 18 February 1294), also known by his temple name as the Emperor Shizu of Yuan and his regnal name Setsen Khan, was the founder and first emperor of the Yuan dynasty of China and the fifth khagan-emperor of the Mongol Empire from 1260 to 1294, although after the division of the empire this was a nominal position. He proclaimed the dynastic name "Great Yuan" in 1271, and ruled Yuan China until his death in 1294.
