Stephen III of Moldavia, also known as Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare, c. 1433–1504), was voivode (prince) of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504 and is remembered as one of the most celebrated rulers in Eastern European history. He preserved Moldavia’s independence through decades of conflict, successfully defending it against the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, and Poland, most famously defeating the Ottomans at the Battle of Vaslui in 1475.
