In 1269, Khubilai Khan commissioned a Tibetan Lama called Matidhvaja Sribhadra to create a new Mongolian script, based on the Tibetan alphabet and thus of Indian (Brahmi script) origin. Some Yuan coins, like this piece, carry an inscription in Phgas-Pa only. The script came into disuse by 1350 and was never used after that. The descendants of Ghengiz Khan and Kublai Khan ruled China as members of the Yuan Dynasty and were also generally acknowledged as Great Khans of the Mongols among the various descendands of Ghengiz Khan all over their domains.
