The Kangra Kingdom was a historic hill principality located in the Kangra Valley of present-day Himachal Pradesh, India, with its roots tracing back to ancient times. Known for the formidable Kangra Fort, the kingdom was ruled for centuries by the Katoch dynasty, one of the oldest surviving royal lineages in India. Kangra's strategic position and fertile lands made it a target for numerous invaders, including Mahmud of Ghazni, who famously plundered the fort in 1009 CE, and later Mughal and Sikh rulers. Despite frequent invasions and shifting allegiances, the kingdom retained a degree of autonomy through much of its history. In the 19th century, Kangra was annexed by the British East India Company after the decline of Sikh power, becoming part of British India. The Kangra Kingdom is remembered today for its rich cultural heritage, especially its distinctive Pahari miniature paintings and temple architecture.
