MAGNVS (MA ligated) above, laureate head of Janus with the features of Cn. Pompeius Magnus // PIVS IMP F below, prow of galley right. . 29.5mm, 14.53 grams. Uncertain Sicilian mint. Pompeia 19, Cohen 2; Cr.479
Ex-CNG.
Scarce and popular coin. While this type has traditionally been assigned to Spain during the period 45-44 BC, it is more likely that it was struck in Sicily after Sextus Pompey's arrival in 43 BC. Here, the edges are rounded unlike the straight edges of the pieces certainly struck in Spain, and the style of this issue varies considerably suggesting that several mints may have been involved in production.
