Valentinian I (Flavius Valentinianus), born in 321 AD, was Roman emperor from 364 to 375 AD and is remembered as a strong military leader who ruled the Western Roman Empire during a period of frequent external threats. A seasoned soldier, he was proclaimed emperor by the army after the death of Jovian, and shortly afterward appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor to govern the East. He died suddenly of a stroke in 375 AD after a heated confrontation with Quadi envoys, and was succeeded by his young son Gratian. Valentinian I is often regarded as one of the last capable rulers of the Western Roman Empire before its eventual decline.
