Sultan Masud Shah of Delhi (r. 1242–1246 CE) was a ruler of the Mamluk (Slave) dynasty and the son of Iltutmish, whose reign marked a period of sharp decline in the Delhi Sultanate. Elevated to the throne by powerful nobles after the fall of his sister Razia Sultana, Masud proved an ineffective and indulgent ruler, showing little interest in governance while allowing court factions to dominate politics. His weakness encouraged rebellion among provincial governors and eroded central authority, particularly in Bengal and other outlying regions. In 1246 he was deposed and killed by the nobility, and his brief, troubled reign underscored the growing power of the Turkish aristocracy over the sultanate, paving the way for further instability until stronger rulers emerged later in the dynasty.
