Akbar the Great (1542–1605) was the third and most celebrated emperor of the Mughal dynasty in India, ruling from 1556 to 1605. Ascending the throne as a teenager, he expanded the empire through military conquest and diplomacy, bringing much of northern and central India under Mughal control. Akbar is remembered not only for his military successes but also for his administrative genius: he introduced an efficient system of revenue collection, reorganized provincial governance, and promoted merit over birth in imperial service. A pragmatic and tolerant ruler, he encouraged dialogue among Hindus, Muslims, Jains, and Christians, even formulating his own syncretic court philosophy known as Dīn-i Ilāhī. His reign ushered in a golden age of art, architecture, and literature, laying the foundations for a strong Mughal state that endured for generations.
