Sultan Ala-ud din Mohammad (r.1296–1316) was one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. He came to the throne after overthrowing his uncle, Jalaluddin Khalji, and built a highly centralized, militarized state. Alauddin defeated repeated Mongol invasions, expanded the sultanate deep into the Deccan, and introduced strict economic and market reforms to control prices and secure resources for his massive army. His reign is also marked by authoritarian governance, heavy taxation, and an ambitious intelligence network. Though controversial and often ruthless, Alauddin Khalji is remembered as one of Delhi’s most formidable medieval rulers, with a reign that transformed the structure and reach of the Sultanate.
