[IMP T AELIVS CAESAR ANTONINVS], bare head right / [TRIB POT COS] S-C, two clasped hands holding winged caduceus and corn-ears. Rome mint, minted February to July 138 CE. 34mm, 25.5 grams. RIC II 1088 (Hadrian).
Antoninus Pius reigned as Caesar from February to July of 138.
Antoninus Pius (86-161 CE) was a respected Roman emperor who ruled from 138 to 161 and became known for his calm, just, and stable leadership. Adopted by Hadrian shortly before the latter’s death, he briefly served as Caesar before succeeding as Augustus, on the condition that he, in turn, adopt Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. His reign was marked by peace, legal reform, careful financial management, and steady administration rather than military conquest. He supported major building works - including the Antonine Wall in Britain - and maintained good relations with the Senate. Antoninus died in 161 and was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, leaving a reputation as one of Rome’s most virtuous rulers.
