Lucius Verus (130–169 CE) was a Roman emperor who ruled jointly with Marcus Aurelius from 161 to 169 CE, marking one of the earliest true co-emperorships in the Roman Empire. Born Lucius Ceionius Commodus, he was adopted into the imperial family through a succession plan begun by Hadrian and confirmed by Antoninus Pius. During his reign he nominally commanded Roman forces in a number of successful wars. Lucius Verus later returned to Rome in triumph but died suddenly in 169 CE, likely from illness during a military campaign along the Danube frontier.
