Vitellius (Aulus Vitellius, 15–69 CE) was a Roman emperor who ruled for a brief period during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors. He was proclaimed emperor by the legions stationed in Germania Inferior after the fall of Galba and defeated the forces of Otho at the First Battle of Bedriacum. Vitellius then entered Rome as emperor, but his rule was short-lived as support soon shifted to Vespasian, whose armies marched on Rome later that year. In December 69 CE, Vitellius was captured and killed by Vespasian’s supporters during the fighting in the city, bringing an end to his brief reign and paving the way for the Flavian dynasty.
