Hadrian (76–138 AD) was Roman emperor from 117 to 138 AD and one of the most capable rulers of the Roman Empire. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he succeeded Trajan and is best known for strengthening and consolidating the empire rather than expanding it further. Hadrian traveled extensively across the provinces, overseeing military defenses, administration, and building projects. His most famous monument is Hadrian’s Wall, built to secure Roman Britain’s northern frontier. A strong admirer of Greek culture, Hadrian sponsored architecture, philosophy, and the arts, helping make his reign a period of relative peace and cultural achievement within the empire.
