Crispus (c. 305–326 AD) was the eldest son of Constantine the Great and one of the most promising figures of the early Roman Empire. Appointed Caesar in 317, he commanded military campaigns along the Rhine frontier and played a key role in his father's victory over Licinius, notably defeating Licinius' fleet at the Battle of the Hellespont in 324. Despite his successes and apparent status as Constantine's heir, Crispus was suddenly arrested and executed in 326 under mysterious circumstances, possibly due to court intrigue involving his stepmother Fausta. His death remains one of the most debated episodes of Constantine's reign.
