Bayezid II (reigned 1481–1512) was an Ottoman sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the son of Mehmed the Conqueror. His reign was marked by consolidation and internal stability rather than major territorial expansion. Bayezid strengthened the empire’s administration, supported Islamic institutions, and promoted trade and culture throughout the Ottoman lands. He is also remembered for welcoming thousands of Jewish refugees expelled from Spain after 1492, allowing them to settle within the empire. Although he fought wars against Venice and the Safavids, Bayezid generally preferred cautious diplomacy. In 1512 he was forced to abdicate after a struggle with his son Selim I, who succeeded him and greatly expanded Ottoman power.
