DIOCLETI-ANVS AVG, laureate he ad right // VIRTVS MILITVM, the Tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before gate of camp, "A" in exergue. Unofficial issue, based on the issue of mint of Rome (RIC VI 40a). 19mm, 2.98 grams. SKU x3395-53377

A fair number of silver argentii of Diocletian and Maximianus are found in Hungary and Romania. They are struck in good silver and are probably not products of counterfeits, but of a temporary or military mint. This issue is perhaps tied to military campaigns of Diocletian against the Carpi and Sarmatians in the late 290's AD, with a temporary military mint striking silver argentii to pay the troops.
