The Yan was one of the seven major states of China's Warring States period. Located in northeastern China, with its center around present-day Beijing, Yan was often considered one of the weaker major states but benefited from its strategic position on the frontier. It frequently fought against neighboring states and northern nomadic peoples. During the late Warring States era, Yan briefly became prominent when Crown Prince Dan sponsored an assassination attempt against Qin Shi Huang, the future first emperor of China. The attempt failed, and Yan was subsequently conquered by the expanding Qin State in 222 BC, shortly before the unification of China under the Qin dynasty.
