REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, Liberty left / LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE around denomination within wreath, date (1848) below. 37.5mm. KRause Pn57 (unpriced).
After the revolution of 1848, a number of designs for the new coins were proposed, differring from each other mostly by the design of the head of Liberty on obverse. This coin is struck in silver or in "white metal", and was probably originally proof. This design was not adopted, so it exists only as patterns. It is a superb high grade coin, never seen this nice! Graded MS-66 by NGC, would be impossible to find in a higher grade.
