Showing signs of extensive use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery rare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Indian brass obverse die was used for the manufacture of a so-called temple token imitating the silver rupees of the Mughal emperor Akbar (1556–1605). Such pieces reproduced the inscriptions and general appearance of Mughal rupees but were not official coins and were never issued by the Mughal state. Rather, they belonged to a broad class of privately produced religious and votive tokens, made by local craftsmen and commercial workshops for the use at temples, shrines and pilgrimage centres where the use of actual money would not have been allowed for various reasons. Many reproduce a frozen date of AH 988 (1580\/81 CE) derived from the prototype coin, although the tokens themselves were manufactured much later, principally during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The tokens are known in silver as well as base-metal and silvered varieties.
