He spent much of his reign defending the empire against invasions and internal unrest, while his son Gallienus governed the western provinces. In 260, Valerian suffered a catastrophic defeat against the Sasanian king Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa and was captured - the only Roman emperor known to have been taken prisoner by a foreign enemy. He died in captivity, and his capture became a symbol of Rome's vulnerability during one of the most difficult periods in its history.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"NumisMallstore","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51317884125499,"sku":"x12214-73436","price":25.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0447\/1750\/6710\/files\/w73436.jpg?v=1780761188","url":"https:\/\/www.numismall.com\/products\/silver-antoninianus-of-valerian-253-260-ad-viminacum-mint-roman-empire-1","provider":"NumisMall","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
