Beginning with the Kshaharata rulers and followed by the long-lived Kardamaka dynasty founded by Chastana, they frequently competed with the Satavahanas and later other regional powers. Their kingdom reached its greatest extent under Mahakshatrapa Rudradaman I in the 2nd century, remembered especially for his celebrated Junagadh inscription.
