At the time, Carthage was the capital of the Vandal Kingdom, ruled by Gelimer. Justinian used the deposition of the pro-Byzantine Vandal king Hilderic as a justification for intervention. In 533 CE, he dispatched an expedition led by the brilliant general Belisarius. After defeating the Vandals at the Battle of Ad Decimum near Carthage, Belisarius entered the city with little resistance. A second decisive victory at the Battle of Tricamarum soon afterward led to the collapse of Vandal power. As a result, Carthage and the rest of Vandal North Africa were incorporated into the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire in 534 CE, becoming one of Justinian's most successful reconquests in his effort to restore Roman rule in the western Mediterranean.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"NumisMallstore","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51358271865147,"sku":"x5787-61525","price":17.95,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0447\/1750\/6710\/files\/w61525.jpg?v=1781663324","url":"https:\/\/www.numismall.com\/products\/rare-ae-nummus-of-justinian-i-527-565-ad-carthage-byzantine-empire-1","provider":"NumisMall","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
