The son of Simon Thassi, he became high priest and political leader after his father’s assassination and successfully defended Judaea against the Seleucid Empire. John Hyrcanus conquered neighboring territories including Idumea and Samaria, enlarged the kingdom, and strengthened Jerusalem politically and economically. Although originally aligned with the Pharisees, he later supported the Sadducees, contributing to growing religious and political divisions within Jewish society. His reign marked the transformation of Judaea into a significant independent regional power before the Roman conquest.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"NumisMall.com","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51278099251515,"sku":"x11843-61081","price":70.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0447\/1750\/6710\/files\/w61081.jpg?v=1779461827","url":"https:\/\/www.numismall.com\/products\/prutah-of-john-hyrcanus-i-134-104-bc-with-antiochus-vii-ancient-judaea","provider":"NumisMall","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
