Thousands of monasteries were closed and Buddhist bells, statues, gongs, and other bronze objects were confiscated and melted down for coinage. The resulting Huichang Kai Yuan coins, named for the Huichang era (841–846), usually bear a mint or locality mark on the reverse. They were produced using ordinary earlier \u003cem\u003eKai Yuan Tong Bao\u003c\/em\u003e coins as mother cash rather than carefully prepared master models, resulting in characteristically soft, poorly defined casts; surviving examples are consequently very often found in worn or rough condition.
