He overthrew the unpopular emperor Phocas and inherited an empire threatened by the Sasanians, who captured Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. After years of setbacks, Heraclius launched a remarkable counteroffensive, defeating the Persians and recovering the lost territories by 628.
