Proclaimed Caesar in 317 while still a child, he was trained for imperial rule and given command responsibilities in the western provinces. After the death of his father in 337, Constantine II became Augustus and ruled jointly with his brothers Constantius II and Constans, dividing the empire among them. Constantine II initially controlled territories including Gaul, Britannia, and Hispania.
