He successfully retained control of Gaul and Britain despite repeated attempts by the central Roman Empire to reclaim these provinces. Although unable to recover Hispania, Victorinus maintained the stability of the Gallic Empire until he was assassinated at Cologne in 271 CE, reportedly over a personal dispute.
