{"title":"Tacitus to Maximinus II (275-313 AD)","description":"This section of Numismall.com contains coins covering the period from Emperor Tacitus (275-276 AD) to Emperor Maximinus II (310-313 AD) and their relatives. The Roman Empire, spanning much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, produced thousands of different types of coins throughout its history. Each of the Emperors and many of the usurpers minted coins showing their portrait and naming them, making the Roman coins very rich in history. Roman currency for most of Roman history consisted of gold, silver, bronze, orichalcum and copper coinage. From its introduction to the Republic, during the third century BC, well into Imperial times, Roman currency saw many changes in form, denomination, and composition. Roman Imperial coinage remains one of the most popular collecting areas in numismatics.","products":[{"product_id":"w35165","title":"Bronze antoninianus of Maximianus Herculius (286-305 AD), Lyons mint, Roman Empire","description":"\u003cp\u003e \tIMP MAXIMIANVS P AVG, radiate cuirassed bust right \/ PAX AVGG, Pax standing left holding Victory and transverse sceptre, officina letter \"C\" in exergue. 24mm, 3.41 grams. A skilled general before becoming emperor, Probus spent much of his reign defending the empire’s frontiers, successfully repelling Germanic tribes and restoring Roman control over rebellious provinces. He also worked to rebuild the economy, encouraging agricultural development and employing soldiers in peaceful public works during peacetime. Known for his energy and discipline, Probus was popular with many but eventually faced resentment from the army. After the assassination of Emperor Aurelian, Tacitus - an elderly senator reportedly chosen by the Senate and army - became emperor at about seventy-five years of age. He worked to restore stability and campaigned successfully against Gothic and other barbarian invasions in Asia Minor.
