Very crude and corrupt legend, probably "Al-Sultan al-adil al-badhil walad sayyid al-mursalin ala al-dunya wa'l din abu'l muzaffar husein shah al-sultan khallada allah mulkahu wa sultanahu", with many omissions and stylizations, Nagari letter "ma" in the central field on the reverse. 30mm, 10.34 grams. G/G -; Rajgor -. SKU X3587-53489

The name of Husein is clear, and the overall style belongs to his period, though it is much cruder than the normal Bengali tankas in his name. The Chittagon trade coinage was minted some years after Husein's reign, it is odd to have such an early Chittagong issue. I contacted John Deyell (the famous numismatist and a specialist in Chittagong tankas), here is his reply: "...the coin is the Chittagong coinage, bungled Hussein Shah legends, Devanagari 'Ma'. There are a number of varieties of this not yet cataloged. Nick Rhodes and Vasant Chowdhury were working on this series, but sadly both have passed away." So it remains unpublished as of now, very interesting and extremely rare.

Bengali Sultanate was in control of Chittagong area during a part of the 16th century, where they minted what is considered to be "trade coinage" in form of crude tankas. The tankas were struck to a lighter standard (compared to the Delhi and Bengali silver tankas) and are generally found only in Chittagong and Comilla area. For a fascinating discussion about these coins please see John Deyell's "The Trade Coinage of the Chittagong Region in the Mid-Sixteenth Century".
